Photochromism is a reversible chemical reaction triggered by light, occurring between two species (named “A” and “B” in the figure). Their best-known application is the ophthalmic glasses, which reversibly change color under sunlight. Throughout the years, photochromism has evolved from the synthesis of new molecules to their photodynamics studies at the ultra-fast time scale and their integration in nanosciences, biology and photonic or optoelectronic devices as light-activated switches. Applications are already widespread in the society and photochromic materials have entered the new generation of innovative functional materials with high added value.
